Sustainable Jersey™ Goes Live!

The SUSTAINABLE JERSEY™ Program is now live at http://www.sustainablejersey.com. Sustainable Jersey is a certification program for municipalities in New Jersey that want to go green, control costs and save money, and take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term. Sustainable Jersey encompasses issues such as global warming, pollution, biodiversity, land use air and water quality, equity, buying local, local living economies, and sustainable agriculture. Hillsborough Township Solidifies Commitment to Going Green
Appoints Steering Committee as Coordinating Body of the Strategic Plan for a Sustainable Hillsborough

Solidifying their commitment to a greener Hillsborough, the Township Committee approved the Sustainable Hillsborough Steering Committee to be the official coordinating body of the Strategic Plan for a Sustainable Hillsborough and established the process for updating and reporting indicators and actions on an annual basis.

The Middlesex County Sustainability Committee held its first meeting December 12th, 2007 at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy. Freeholders H. James Polos and Camille Fernicole, co-chairs of the committee, presented on Middlesex County's current sustainability efforts. Randy Solomon, Director of NJSSI, gave an overview of the Sustainable Middlesex Project. Middlesex County has hired NJSSI, through a $75,000 grant from the Office of Smart Growth, to help the county develop a strategic plan for sustainability. NJSSI hosted the League of Municipalities' newly organized Mayors Committee for a Green Future - Executive Committee on July 9, 2008 at the Bloustein School at Rutgers University.

The MCGF Executive Committee met to develop a number of priority projects all designed to facilitate the greening of NJ municipalities. NJSSI and Municipal Land Use Center at the College of New Jersey have joined together with the Mayors' Committee for a Green Future on projects that include a "Green Future Roadmap", development of at Green Seminar Track in conjunction with the League’s Annual Conference in November, and a Green Future Grants Program to be conducted in conjunction with the Wal-Mart Corporation. The Roadmap will provide direction and resources for municipalities to institute programs that address sustainability and green communities.  For more, visit Mayors' Committee for a Green Future Project Page.


NJSSI recently released the final report of our multi-year Energy Sustainability Project.
New Jersey has adopted the most aggressive target for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of any U.S. state. Now New Jersey is grappling with the difficulty of achieving these targets. You can read the final report via PDF: Climate and Energy in New Jersey. The report presents original energy and climate research, future NJ scenarios, and brings consensus on a set of priorities for climate and energy policy in New Jersey. 

The report was released at a conference held on October 29, 2007 at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick entitled "Reaching Our Targets: Innovative Global Warming Solutions for New Jersey."
